Mephistopheles in Antiqued Black
$42.95
This extraordinary sculpture, an original piece from The Black Broom, is made of cast stone and measures approximately 14.5 inches tall by 3.25 inches across the base. We hand-paint it to have an aged look similar to the original old ones. This piece is a replica of a cigar shop statue made by an old world artisan (unknown). We had to restore/resculpt parts of the original piece to make it look as it appears in our photos. Cigar shop figures are part of American folk sculpture and were used as advertisements in early tobacco shops. Because of the general illiteracy of the populace, early store owners used descriptive emblems or figures to advertise their shops' wares. Mephistopheles' association with tobacco stemmed from carved German pipes in his image. It comes brand new. Please note: this item is hand-painted so it will vary slightly from the one featured in our photos here.
Mephistopheles is the name of the demon in the Faust legend. The character has since appeared in other works as a stock character version of the devil. While Lucifer is the bearer of light, Mephistopheles is the shunner of light. There are many interpretations of Mephistopheles. Mostly, this agent or servant of Lucifer is portrayed as a collector of already damned souls. He has also been described as playing the role of protector (he warns Faustus of the choice he is making by "selling his soul" to the Devil).
